Insomnia

This is all I can think about lately: SLEEP. Seriously, I need some. I've been having insomnia for more than 2 weeks now and I can't barely hold myself up now. I see everything blur, I'm cranky and mad all the time... I like to sleep a lot and I didn't used to have problems until now. Even my husband joked with me that I was the man of the house because I put my head in the pillow and I was as sleep as a rock... not even my baby crying would wake me up!... and now... now I'm miserable... and worrying about not sleeping is just making it worse... please HELP!!!! Anybody knows any good remedies for that? Taking pills is not an option.. I tried them and I felt like I was drugged and the feeling didn't go away in the whole day.... please? anybody?

Ok...this is a very tough thing to combat as it is so different for everyone. So, this helps me a little bit sometimes (I have chronic sleep issues)..
No caffeine (soda, iced tea, coffee after 2-3pm. Lights low for about an hour before bed (this helps the brain ready itself for sleep) and no cell phone (it stimulates the brain, somehow...so says The Today Show on NBC). Herbal Tea is settling (use sweetner-not sugar), warm vanilla milk works too. I will take a very warm bath with a calming oil, soap, bubbles, etc.... and drink my warm milk or tea while trying to relax and calm my mind down from the stress of the day. Then head right into cozy jammies and into bed. No talking, tv or stimulation. My brain is easily hyped right back up.

But none of this will be much good if a ton of distractions are going on noisely around you or if you have a medical issue. Talk to your doctor if you haven't already. If the pills knock you out...try 1/2 or take it much earlier so it wears off before you wake. A friend of mine in school would take 2 teaspoons of Benadryl when she couldn't sleep...worked every time for her. Now me, I can take 3 of the biggest dose of prescription pills that should knock out a horse and I am 100% fine. My body metabolizes them too quickly. Now that I have written a full chapter, I will try to head off to sleepy land myself.

Hola Danita! Sorry to read about your lack of sleep... Here are my remedies... FIRST: Is something bothering you, upsetting you, worrying you or stressing you? If yes, you gotta find a solution to it right away and not postpone until it escalades to the point of no return. SECOND: Exercise!!!Wear yourself out! Walk, walk, walk! It is good for the moral and good for your body and it does miracles! THIRD: A bit before going to bed, make yourself a cup of warm-almost-hot milk sweetened with honey. This is what my grandmother and my mother would make me to make me feel good and cozy and groggy before going to bed. I have read somewhere that it works because something in the milk is activated when you warm it and the mixture with honey seems to be a no-fail way to go! FOURTH: Read in bed. Warm milk is supposed to work. I take one Tylenol pm and I am not groggy in the morning.

I heard Dr Oz saying what Dani just told you. I am having the same problem. Look is 1:30am and I am wide awake. I try to read until I am very tired and then go to sleep but my girls wake up at 7am so I don't sleep much (like 5 hours a day)
I like to paint at night when everybody is sleeping and I think my brain gets to much stimulation. When I notice that is very late and I am wide awake I just take a benadril, but it is very hard to wake up the next day.

danita, me damucha pena lo que te esta pasando.
Ante todo no tomes medicamentos, solo empeorarias las cosas, harias una dependencia que despues seria dificil de quitar.
antes que sea mas grave el problema trata de resolverlo. Yo uso mucho la medicina alternativa,antroposofica para ser exactos. claro tambien hago otras disciplinas y entre todo junto me han ayudado mucho a resolver ciertos problemas fisicos y animicos. Lo que puedo decirte esque todo se genera por primero porque hay algo quen o va bien en uno mismo. per es todo un rollo.
si puedes atenderte con un homeopata perfecto, veras como te ayuda. Las flores de Bach son buenas tambien, pero tienes que enocntrar quien te consulte y te las prepare. no se donde vives, pero seguro puedes encontrar excelente ayuda cerca de ti.
Haz mucha ctividad fisica durante el dia de modo que te canse sanamente y en la noche tengas buen reposo. si hay algo que te inquieta o te perturba trata de resolverlo, muchas veces la ansiedad y la tension, e, stress el trabaajo, todo aundado crean estas cosas...
te recominedo respirar bien, profundamente pero suave lento. hay maneras para aprdender arespirar. Yo hago yoga y eso me ayuda mucho. puedes intentar tambien relajarte durante el dia. Nada mejor que salir a caminar de preferencia a lugares tranquilos en contacto con la naturaleza... no veas peliculas fuertes, no tengas emociones fuertes o nada que te provoque estados de ansiedad. La comida, evita cosas psadas poco antes de ir a dormir, son dificles de digerir.. grasas,, carne,, la carne crea stress.. bebe infusiones, la melissa es calmante, essential oils en tu almohada, lalavanda ayuda a dormir y expande el alma... rescue remedy en el te antes de ir a la cama, 4 gotas, cuando quieras, no hay problemas con eso.
date calma, tiempo, quizas eltrababjas mucho, no se... quizas hay lago que te incomoda.. talves cambiar de actividad por unos dia, hacer el jardin, comprar muebles, flores, no se...
musica relajante, hay muchas formas,pero sobre todo la respuesta pienos que esta en ti porque tu sabe slo que te pasa y sabes como podrias resolverlo.
cuentas con mi apoyo, no se ocmo podria ayudarte, estamos muy lejos, pero ya lo sabes.
hay mil terapias, trata de encontrar una que te guste. y no te olvides del moviemiento fisico, es indispensable para sentirse bien, quizas lo haces, no lo se,si es asi mucho mejor porque entonces ya tienes dado un paso.
cualquier cosa escirbime y podemos platicar de esto mas a fondo si tienes ganas.

lavendar, chamomille...inhale or drink soothing herbs before bed. I have a lavendar eye pillow that is very relaxing, especially when you lay in bed and tense and relax each of your muscle groups in turn, until your body feels as if it could float off the bed. And I so know how you feel. The last month of my pregnancy, I literally didn't sleep for five days straight, and then I could only get a couple of hours a night. i was so weak I couldn't stand up, could hardly talk, and the anxiety of not being "in control" of the weird feelings this was causing in my body (the head especially) about drove me mad! I was on all sorts of "safe" pills and none worked...I either felt like crap for a day or more after taking it, or it didn't help at all. I hope something works for you soon, because I swear the lack of sleep is much more detrimental than the lack of food or water!

I'll try some of your remedies and see which one works best on me... oh by the way I forgot one little thing that is 2 years old and likes to cry exactly when I'm finally falling asleep!!! aaaarrrgggggggh!!!!

No es fácil, con hijo,trabajo, con un montón de ideas...hoy en dia todo es lleno de informacion.Yo también tomo flores de Bach, y té antes de dormir.A veces me tomoun vinito!!Espero que te mejores enseguida y descanses bien durante las noches, es que yo entinedo, a mí por ejemplo me viene la inspiración por la noche, también tengo un niño, y cunado el duerme, corro hasta el atelier para terminar mi atrabajo!evito hacer eso, por que si paso de las 10 p.m., me despabilo, y no consigo dormir.A veces es cuestión de regular horarios.

Exercise...a 30 minute walk in the morning works for me. Put your baby in the stroller and take a little walk. I have had sleep problems for years and have tried everything but I believe that a healthy diet and a little exercise is the best sleep medicine.

I sometimes have the same problem as you with going to sleep, where sleep is just taking you off with her and then a little someone decides to wake up... and in our house if it's not the little wee person it is the cat deciding to meow at the door because she can't sleep and wants some company while she eats.

In the past I have taken pills, the doctor will be able to give you ones that don't last as long I had the choice of 24 hours, 12 or six... I tried 12 and they left me groggy the next morning and grumpy for the rest of the day. So then I tried the six and they were good, I only needed them for 3 - 4 nights and then my body got back into a routine again. But some of these things works well for us but not so for others.

I think the coments others have made are very good ideas to try, but if it continues you may need to see the doc if you haven't already... not good for you to be not getting enough sleep. Sleep deprivation does funny things to the mind (I think they used it in the war as a method of torture)

Hello Danita,

I'm so sorry for your insomnia ; I had this problem a few years back, lots of things on my mind... I don't have any remedy to add as Ale, Dawn and Juliana already told you about plants, Bach flowers and other natural ways which I use.
I hope you will soon find a way to have a deep and nice sleep.

Thank you for your help. I'll try some of your remedies and see what happens. Yesterday I had no trouble going to sleep. I went at 3:30 am and easily fell asleep hehe... I hope that's not how it's going to be!

I rarely get more than 5 hours of sleep Danita...so I'm taking notes here!! My mind races when I go to bed....so I always try and read for a bit. I hate sleeping pills too!! Hang in there:) xox...jenn

Hi Danita, I have been into homeopathics,etc... for the last 15-20 yrs.. I don't do drugs, unless infection... What has worked for me , besides clearing the mind w/ kali phosphoricum (for ex.), would be maybe a kava-kava, valerian, OR melatonin. I would only do 1-few days. , although they're usually fine, but check w/your dr. or pharmacist, especially if you take any medicine. I would just do one of them.I would Just follow directions on container.

Other things that may help, if you have a lot on your mind or stress might be passion flower, or holy basil (for things overwhelming), Rescue Remedy or Rescue Remedy Sleep, or if very upset, ignatia amara for upset/grief...These are very benign, but check w/ your dr. if you take anything, as some herbals conflict. The homeopathics are able to be taken w/most things, except maybe some cancer alternatives.

These can be purchased at like a VIt. Shop- but, I'm a lay person, and these things have been approved by many of our family drs. as they are simple and don't usually conflict.If you're not into naturals, then check w/someone.

i feel for ya girl...i get in those ruts when i can't sleep and the more you can't sleep..the more it drives you NUTS!!
i have had good luck with tylenol PM's..they dont make me feel weird or groggy in the morning.
I've also heard that Cherries are full of something that help you sleep!
ya might have to eat a whole bushel of them tho lol
i find that keeping a journal next to the bed helps.. write down all the things you're thinking about.. then its OUTTA your head and you can rest.
and read.. read...read... that helps me. i read somewhere that if you get in a routine of reading or writing in a journal each nite at bedtime..you will put your brain in a routine..and it will know to 'shut off' when you turn out the light.
